Whangaparaoa Road is the main through road feeding the length of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula from Silverdale to Gulf Harbour and Army Bay. Whilst Whangaparaoa includes a large number of suburbs, the main centres are at Red Beach, Whangaparaoa, Manly, and Gulf Harbour. Red Beach has a small commercial centre but is fast becoming one of the most sought after locations to live on the Hibiscus Coast due to its close proximity to the motorway. The main commercial centre is in Stanmore Bay/Whangaparaoa and includes the new New World development, bulk retail areas, industrial units, and the Whangaparaoa Plaza shopping centre. Further along Whangaparaoa Road is the boutique Manly village, and then Gulf Harbour, well known for its Marina and golf courses.
Travel time to Silverdale and the motorway on-ramps ranges from less than 5 minutes in Red Beach, to around 20 minutes in Gulf Harbour. The proposed $160 million Penlink project linking the Peninsula with the motorway at Redvale will provide an alternative connection between Whangaparaoa and Auckland. This will substantially reduce travelling time to the Whangaparaoa peninsula and in particular open up further access to Gulf Harbour. The commencement of this project is subject to Ministry of Transport approval and funding.
